WHY DOES HCF PUT SUCH EMPHASIS ON CHURCH MEMBERSHIP?

We believe we are taking a biblical approach in respect to membership. We see at least four strands of evidence from God's Word that point to the importance of local church membership:

  1. Responsibility and privilege of some having governing power over the church. The church appears to be the final 'court of appeals' in matters of church authority (Matthew 18:15-17). It seems reasonable to say the church in this context must be a definable group to handle such a weighty matter.

  2. The possibility of being excommunicated from the church. Another implication from Matthew 18:15-17, is excluding a person from church so that he becomes to you as a Gentile and tax collector. It would be difficult to exclude a person from that of which they are not a member.

  3. How does submission and leadership function without membership? "Obey your leaders and submit to them..." (Hebrews 13:17), "...respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you..." (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13), "Let the elders who rule well..." (1 Timothy 5:17). Downplaying the importance of membership creates difficulty in implementing these commands seriously and practically.

  4. The flock must have definable limits. It is difficult for elders and pastors to know for whom they are responsible and for whom they will give an account (Acts 20:28) without membership to define the limits of their flock.

DO I HAVE TO BE BAPTIZED AT HCF IN ORDER TO BECOME A MEMBER?

No. If you have been baptized a believers' baptism in a different gospel-preaching/teaching church, there is no need to be baptized again.

DO I HAVE TO BE BAPTIZED TO BECOME A MEMBER OF HCF?

Yes, you will need to be a born again, baptized believer.

DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF HCF IN ORDER TO SERVE?

Yes and no. Yes you have to be a member to serve in a ministry (i.e. serve on the Worship Team, teach in the Children's Ministry, etc.). No you don't have to be a member to perform acts of service (i.e. setting up tables and chairs, emptying trash, etc.).
